A petrol tanker spilled its contents following an accident in the Adeeke area of Iwo, Osun State, on Sunday.
The tanker, traveling from Ibadan along the Iwo/Ibadan Road, reportedly swerved to avoid a commercial motorcyclist who suddenly veered into its path. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the tanker to overturn and spill its load.
A local resident, identified only as Rasaq, described the scene, saying, “We all ran away after seeing petrol on the road. But shortly after, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officers, and the Osun State Fire Service arrived and cordoned off the area to prevent a fire.”
Kehinde Adeleke, spokesperson for the Osun NSCDC, confirmed the incident, saying the tanker, which was bound for Osogbo, overturned while trying to avoid hitting an okada rider and his passengers who had fallen in its path.
“Although there were no fatalities, the tanker spilled its contents on the road, prompting authorities to secure the area,” Adeleke said. “The situation is now under control.”
Ibrahim Adekunle, spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, also noted that timely intervention by fire service personnel helped prevent further damage. “Officers from the Iwo Zonal Command and the Fire Service Headquarters in Osogbo are at the scene managing the situation,” Adekunle said.
Emergency crews worked swiftly to secure the area and prevent any potential fire hazards from the spilled fuel.
