Osun to Lead FG’s Food Sufficiency Program for Southwest States

Osun State has been designated by the Federal Government as the coordinating point for the implementation of the Food System Transformation Pathways in the Southwest region.

The initiative aims to enhance nutritious and sufficient food production across Nigeria, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

In a statement released Tuesday in Osogbo, Osun’s capital, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi outlined the program’s objectives.

Alimi explained that the Food System Transformation Pathways, initiated by the United Nations, seeks to create well-functioning food systems that improve incomes for smallholder farmers and small- to medium-sized food enterprises.

“This initiative will empower women, create job opportunities for youths, and increase economic circulation,” he said.

By 2030, the program aims to reduce poverty and unemployment, particularly among young people, while addressing issues of hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition, and limiting food imports.

“It will also enhance women’s empowerment in agriculture and improve environmental performance,” Alimi added.

He confirmed that a letter has been sent to Governor Ademola Adeleke, with copies shared with his counterparts in Oyo and Ekiti states.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, noted that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration efforts to achieve food security and meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria.

“This is part of the steps taken to further Nigeria’s achievements discussed at the Stock Taking Moment (STM) in Rome, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima in 2023,” Alimi said.

He emphasized that the coordination arrangement aims to build on recommendations from a retreat attended by the Commissioners for Economic Planning, Agriculture, and Health in Abuja.

All 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to collaborate effectively to implement the multi-sectoral plan of action for food and nutrition.
