The Osun State Government has announced that the newly approved minimum wage of ₦75,554.20 for civil servants will take effect on December 1, 2024.
The wage increase follows successful negotiations between the state government and organized labor unions. In addition to the new minimum wage, the government has approved a ₦25,000 across-the-board increase for pensioners. Arrears for the new minimum wage will be paid alongside November salaries for workers.
At the signing ceremony on Friday, Osun’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, emphasized that the move reflects Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to a motivated and satisfied workforce. “This development demonstrates the Adeleke administration’s determination to maintain a happy labor force and prioritize the welfare of workers and retirees alike,” Alimi said.
The event was attended by Abimbola Fasasi and Christopher Arapasopo, state chairmen of the Trade Union Congress and Nigeria Labour Congress, respectively.
Osun’s Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, praised the leadership of Governor Adeleke, calling it compassionate and responsible. “The governor has shown empathy and responsibility in addressing labor-related issues,” Adewusi said. “We urge workers to reciprocate by delivering quality service and enhancing productivity across the state.”
A circular issued on November 29, 2024, and signed by the Head of Service, Ayanleye Aina, outlined the details of the new wage structure. The document noted that the wage increase followed “exhaustive negotiations” that considered factors such as revenue availability, debt obligations, and the state’s long-term growth prospects.
The circular also highlighted that the improved pension package for retirees reflects the government’s commitment to addressing outstanding issues for senior citizens.
“The effective date for the new minimum wage is December 1, 2024, with one month’s arrears to be paid. Other salary structures within the public service will be addressed in due course,” the circular stated.
The government urged all public servants, including local government employees, to contribute to the state’s development by enhancing service delivery and boosting revenue generation. “All public servants are enjoined to work with renewed vigour, agility, and dedication to improve service delivery and contribute to the continued development of Osun State,” the circular concluded.
