Retired civil and public servants in Osun State have called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to implement a court-ordered N18,000 minimum wage for pensioners.
Members of the Forum of 2011/2012 Retired Public Servants of Osun gathered on Ogo-Oluwa/Abere Road in Osogbo to press their demands, despite being barred from protesting at the Governor’s Office in Abere by security personnel.
The pensioners’ key demand is the implementation of the 2009 N18,000 minimum wage, which they say should be used to calculate their pensions and gratuities. Yemi Lawal, leader of the group, accused the state government of failing to comply with a ruling by the Industrial Court delivered on October 5, 2017.
Lawal said that, despite winning the case, the state government delayed action by filing an appeal in 2021. That appeal was dismissed on February 7, 2024. He emphasized that the pensioners are seeking the recalculation of the difference between the N9,000 and N18,000 minimum wages and an adjustment to their terminal benefits accordingly.
Lawal warned of potential unrest if the state government continues to disregard the court order. The group also called on the Attorney General of the Federation and other stakeholders to intervene and ensure the Osun State government complies with the ruling.
