The wife of Osun State Governor, Mrs. Titilola Adeleke, has urged residents to take advantage of free screenings for diabetes and hypertension offered by the Governors’ Forum and the World Health Organization.

Adeleke made the call Monday in Osogbo at the launch of “Project 10 Million,” a national health campaign aimed at screening 10 million Nigerians for these conditions.

During the event, the Osun First Lady underwent screening herself, emphasizing the initiative’s importance in addressing the rising rates of hypertension and diabetes in Nigeria. She noted that these two ailments account for approximately 27% of annual deaths in the country.

“Project 10 Million is a critical health initiative aimed at tackling the growing impact of non-communicable diseases, particularly hypertension and diabetes,” Adeleke said. “These diseases pose a serious threat to the well-being of our communities, contributing to 27% of all annual deaths in Nigeria. Seventeen percent of Nigerians aged 30 to 70 are at risk of dying from these diseases, highlighting the urgent need for action.”

Adeleke also announced the “Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers” campaign, which is being led by health commissioners from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with approval from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

The screening campaign will run from October 28 to November 3, with the goal of screening approximately 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes.

“Take advantage of this great opportunity to be examined for hypertension and diabetes,” she urged residents. “By knowing your numbers, you are taking a significant step toward managing your health. Together, we can make a difference and create a better future for all.”

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Mr. Jola Akinola, highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening public health and providing quality healthcare services. He stated that the campaign aims to raise awareness about the risks and management of non-communicable diseases while offering immediate counseling and treatment.
