Osun State Election History

It is impossible to talk about transition of power in Osun state without mentioning or taking deep look Into the cycle of events that heralded the elections. From the military era to transition of power to democracy in the 4th republic, like many other states in Nigeria, Osun has also witnessed political drama. Events of it saw people elected a leader, and the court affirming the leader and many unfolding intricacies of the election.

Till today, this election cycles has improved and changed the political consciousness of the people and for readiness for the periodical events every four- years. This piece is aimed at refreshing us and updating interested Osun indigenes that may want to look into results and trajectories that opened them ti power.

Election Results

1999

The total number of registered voters in the state was 1,496,058. Total number of votes cast was 547,077, while number of valid votes was 536,252. Rejected votes were 10,825.

2003

A total of three candidates registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the election.[19] PDP candidate OlagunsoyeOyinlola won election for a first tenure, defeating AD Incumbent Governor, Adebisi Akande, and ANPP’s Lai Oriowo. 

The total number of registered voters in the state was 1,367,627. However, only 58.63% (i.e. 801,812) of registered voters participated in the excerise.

2007

Olagunsoye Oyinlola from the People’s Democratic Party won the election, defeating Rauf Aregbesola from the Action Congress of Nigeria. Registered voters was 1,297,297.[3][4]

2014

A total number of 20 candidates registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the election. 

A total number of 1,407,222 voters registered in the election.[20]
