The Force Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force has began investigation into the murder of Remi Abass, the court reinstated chairman of the Irewole local government, this medium has learnt.

Abass was killed in a bizarre manner by hoodlums working for the Peoples Democratic Party, when he went to the premises of Irewole local government secretariat in Ikire, on the day APC members elected in the October 15, 2022 election went to resume at their duty posts across the state.

According to some security sources, Abass having been pre-informed that PDP hoodlums were present in large number at the entrance to the LG secretariat, had stayed from the area.

It was also learnt that he decided to show up at the Council Area, after receiving a call from a senior police officer, who informed him that the environment was safe for him to come.

“It was when he got there that the hoodlums attacked him. He was shot at several times and hit with machete. But when all of that did not kill him, those hoodlums brought out saw and cut his head with it.

“They later poured acidic substance on his head just to ensure he died. They fled the scene shortly afterwards.

“Police investigation is seeking to know why the security officer will call Abass to come when the hoodlums were so many in the area. Was it a case of luring him into the hands of those that wanted to kill him?

“That question has been partly answered. Huge amount of money was discovered in the account of the said security officer. The man is retiring in another 3 years and a sum of N30 million was deposited in his account few hours to the incident by a known politician in the town,” a top security source monitoring development around the matter told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, a member of the National Assembly considered a close ally of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has been identified as the likely sponsor of the hoodlums that carried out the killing of Abass.

Investigation by our correspondent, revealed that the said Adeleke ally has been invited on the matter to the Force Headquarters but gave several excuses as to why he would not be able to honour the invite yet.

It was also gathered that 10 people, including a police officer are currently being detained in Osogbo and Abuja by the police in relation to the crime.

A security source close to one of the operatives handling investigation on the murder in Osogbo Command headquarters, told our correspondent that, “There are many startling revelations already. Some highly placed individuals and top government officials are involved in the crime and all of them will be arrested.

“10 people are in detention in Osogbo and Abuja over the matter. But the suspected instigator of that violence is using government influence to frustrate his invitation. He maybe arrested in the next few days, if he doesn’t honour invitation.”
