The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has arrested at least 100 illegal immigrants in Osun State as authorities ramp up security measures in the region.
The arrests, which occurred in recent weeks, come amid growing concerns over security threats, including the apprehension of suspected ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province) members in Ilesa, and reports of bandit activity in South-Western forests. The immigrants, who were detained in groups, were reportedly unable to provide valid travel documents or explain their reasons for being in the state.
A security source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrests but declined to disclose the exact location for security reasons. “They were arrested, and the Osun State government was informed,” the source said. The state government provided buses to transport the detainees.
Despite repeated attempts, the spokesperson for the NIS in Osun, Olu Moyosade, could not be reached for comment, with phone calls and text messages going unanswered.
In a statement to the press, Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, confirmed the arrests and reassured residents that the state government was closely monitoring the situation.
“We are on top of the security situation. Our residents should not panic,” Alimi said. “The issue of security is not something we can disclose fully, but we remain proactive in our efforts.”
Alimi noted that the state government had been vigilant, leading to recent arrests of suspected terrorists in Ilesa. He added that Governor Ademola Adeleke and security chiefs were working together to address security concerns, including bolstering the Amotekun security outfit, a local initiative aimed at combating crime.
Alimi also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for sounding the alarm about the infiltration of South-West forests by bandits. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens,” Alimi said.
