Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared three days of mourning to honor the late Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The mourning period will run from November 7 to 9, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Alimi, announced in a statement Thursday.
Alimi said condolence registers have been opened at both the Government House and the Governor’s Office for residents to sign.
The commissioner described Lagbaja’s death as a “devastating” loss to both the nation and humanity, emphasizing that the late army chief’s contributions would not be forgotten.
“The government is deeply saddened by this irreparable loss of one of Osun’s most distinguished sons,” the statement read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Lagbaja family of Ilobu, the Olobu of Ilobu, and all those affected.”
The statement also encouraged residents to use the condolence registers to share their memories and honor Lagbaja’s legacy.
Governor Adeleke closed the statement with a prayer: “We pray God to grant late General Taoreed Lagbaja Aljanna Firdaus. Ameen.”
Lagbaja, 56, passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness, though the specific cause was not disclosed.
