Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to prohibit heavy-duty trucks from using the Olaiya Bridge in Osogbo due to safety concerns.

The decision follows technical reports indicating potential risks associated with the bridge’s condition. A statement from the governor’s spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, announced the directive after a security council meeting held in Osogbo.

“The decision became necessary to protect the bridge from possible collapse and to prevent any untoward incidents caused by the continuous passage of heavy trucks,” the statement said.

As a precautionary measure, Adeleke has instructed the Ministry to install barricades on the bridge, allowing only cars and buses to pass. The Ministry is also tasked with issuing a travel advisory, accompanied by radio announcements, to inform the public and transport operators.

Adeleke emphasized that the decision aims to safeguard public safety and preserve state infrastructure, while a comprehensive review of the bridge’s condition will be conducted by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
