Residents and business owners in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, are expressing frustration over a prolonged blackout that began Monday night following a collapse of the national power grid.
Local entrepreneurs report significant financial losses due to the outage and the rising costs of fuel. Despite paying high electricity bills, many say they would prefer reliable power supply over ongoing service disruptions.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and other electricity distribution companies confirmed that the blackout has impacted numerous customers within their service areas.
Mojirade Alawode, who operates a cold storage business, stated that she has been forced to rely on a generator to keep her freezers operational. “I have four freezers in my shop that require electricity to function, housing perishable items that must remain cold,” she said. “Running my business on electricity is more cost-effective than using fuel.”
Another resident, Adekunle Ojo, is considering solar energy as a long-term solution due to the ongoing grid issues. “The electricity supply in my area has been poor, and this latest collapse has made it worse. It feels like we have been overlooked in terms of power supply.”
Henry Omoye, who runs a business center, said that he has been relying on alternative power since opening for business. “The cost of fuel this October is significantly higher than during previous outages. Things are expensive, but I need to keep my business running to support my family. The government must act quickly to address this situation.”
