Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke announced that his administration has been actively pursuing a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion initiative for the past eight months.
The initiative aims to modernize the state’s transportation system by converting state-run Imole buses to CNG-powered vehicles, providing a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke revealed that the project has been underway since January 2024.
The governor noted that the state is collaborating with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other stakeholders to ensure the initiative’s success. He also highlighted ongoing public-private partnership negotiations with three companies, including a local CNG firm, which are making significant strides in advancing the project.
“As part of the initiative, the state’s Imole buses, currently offering palliative transport services, will soon be converted to CNG models,” Adeleke said.
He added that Osun State will also benefit from a federal initiative aimed at promoting the nationwide adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel source.
“To support this transition, plans are underway to establish dedicated CNG charging points across the state. The government is also exploring partnerships for acquiring CNG-powered buses through public-private partnership agreements,” Adeleke said.
He emphasized that this expansion is expected to enhance the current transport palliative system, which has been providing essential services to Osun residents.
